VISIT FROM THE SA MINISTER OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

The Chamber was honoured to host Dr Blade Nzimande, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, for a roundtable at Laytons ETL on Monday, 2 March. Dr Nzimande delivered an insightful address on “Hydrogen and Battery Research: From Innovation to Manufacturing”, outlining South Africa’s National Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technologies Strategy — known as Hydrogen South Africa (HySA).

HySA aims to drive innovation across the hydrogen value chain, unlock new hightechnology industries, and support job creation through the country’s rich Platinum Group Metals resources. Key priorities include renewablelinked hydrogen production, storage and distribution technologies, and the development of a strategic Hydrogen Valley stretching from Limpopo to Durban.

We were also pleased to welcome senior leaders from South Africa’s academic and research community, including Professor Mosa Moshabela (UCT), Professor Sibongile Muthwa (Nelson Mandela University), Dr Derrick Swartz, and DirectorGeneral Dr Mlungisi Cele.

A valuable discussion was conducted on the future of green hydrogen and its economic potential in South Africa.
