Book Launch – ‘Let Not The Sun Set On You’His Excellency Kingsley Mamabolo is South Africa’s High Commissioner to the UK. In his autobiography, published earlier this year, he talks about his life growing up in the dusty streets of Soweto, on the outskirts of Johannesburg, to joining the African National Congress at the height of the anti-apartheid struggle and subsequently going into exile in various countries including Angola, Germany, Russia, Cuba, and Tanzania. The struggle for him is not only for freedom but also learning to survive without family and away the country that he loves. |
On his return to a democratic South Africa, he is appointed as High Commissioner to Zimbabwe by Nelson Mandela. From there his illustrious diplomatic career takes flight from Ethiopia to Nigeria, to the United Nations and back to Africa, eventually ending up in his current role in London. Join us as Mr Mamabolo talks about his inspirational journey and what has shaped him as a person and top diplomat, sharing stories from his book that are often funny and deeply moving. His distinguished diplomatic career has seen him serve as Deputy Joint Special Representative for UNAMID and roles representing his homeland, South Africa, as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Chair of the “Group of 77” developing countries and China. He has served as High Commissioner to Nigeria and as Special Envoy to the Great Lakes where he played a central role in the peace processes in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was also High Commissioner to Zimbabwe and to the African Union where he led reconciliation efforts in post-war Sierra Leone.
