Football icon Lucas Radebe has become a Solidarity Walk Ambassador to support the global fundraising challenge
One of South Africa’s greatest ever footballers has become the latest star appointed as an Ambassador for the Chamber’s international fundraiser being held from 29th to 31st August 2020.
Lucas Radebe grew up in Diepkloof in Soweto and then completed his school years in Bophuthatswana, one of the apartheid-era ‘homelands’ north of Johannesburg. In the years that followed, he rose to sporting stardom, becoming part of the historic Bafana Bafana – the national football team – that won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on home soil in 1996. Lucas led Bafana Bafana to two FIFA World Cups (1998 and 2002) before embarking on a remarkable international career with Leeds United where he became the first South African footballer to captain a Premier League team.
The SA Chamber’s Solidarity Walk is a great way to show support for the Solidarity Fund. I will be walking in solidarity with the South African diaspora and friends of our nation who want to recognise the work of those helping the country overcome the pandemic.

Lucas Radebe and rugby legend Andre Snyman have both joined a growing number of respected public figures and business leaders who are supporting the SA Chamber’s initiative to show solidarity with the Rainbow Nation. Earlier in the year, a talented line-up of inspiring South African vocalists blended their voices in a special version of ‘Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika to launch the awareness and fundraising drive. Singers included Karen Zoid, PJ Powers, Roxi Abbott, Nic Vani, Christian Heath, Russell Spence, Pearl Vani, Siyakha Tshayela, Queen Patience, Thandi Banjwa and Mick Burns.
The Solidarity Walk is a fun challenge that offers South Africans, citizens in the diaspora and friends of the nation the opportunity to get involved in social groups, families or individually at home. Participants are reminded to check local public health guidelines when planning their activity.
