The acclaimed South African rugby union former player and current coach Andre Snyman has been appointed as an Ambassador for the South African Chamber of Commerce Solidarity Walk international fundraiser being held from 29th to 31st August 2020.

The Solidarity Walk is a call for people to join and collectively cover 2,414 miles – the furthest distance across South Africa from Cape Town to Beitbridge on the Zimbabwe border, and back again! The initiative is a global opportunity for South African diaspora and friends of the country to demonstrate solidarity with the country as it faces the impact of the pandemic. It also aims to promote awareness and raise money for the Solidarity Fund that was set up to strengthen critical prevention, detection, care and support activity for those affected by the crisis.

“I am proud to be part of the SA Chamber’s Solidarity Walk. I am walking in solidarity for the all those affected by the pandemic in South Africa,” says Andre Snyman, “As a sportsman and passionate about fitness, I am especially pleased to be supporting the Solidarity Walk as it’s fun way to get active for a good cause.”

Andre Snyman enjoyed an illustrious career playing for the Springboks and earned 38 caps during his 10 year tenure with the South African national team (1996‒2006). Snyman played for the Blue Bulls (1994-1999) before moving to The Sharks (1999–2003) and finally made the move to England to play for the Leeds Tykes (2003‒2007). Since Snyman finally hung up his playing boots in 2007, he has gone on to have a distinguished coaching career. He has also widely respected for his support for growing rugby at grassroots level and developing youth programmes.

His support has been warmly welcomed by Sharon Constançon, SA Chamber chairman, who says: “We are delighted that Andre Snyman has become a Solidarity Walk Ambassador. While Andre now lives in England, he remains proudly South African, committed to keeping strong ties with his homeland and is standing in solidarity with the Chamber for this fundraising challenge.”

Andre Snyman has joined a growing number of respected public figures and business leaders who are supporting the SA Chamber’s work to show solidarity with the Rainbow Nation that began earlier in the year with an exciting line-up of leading South African vocalists to blend their voices in a special version of ‘Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika. Singers included Karen Zoid, PJ Powers, Roxi Abbott, Nic Vani, Christian Heath, Russell Spence, Pearl Vani, Siyakha Tshayela, Queen Patience, Thandi Banjwa and Mick Burns.

Everyone is welcome to register and take part by walking, running, hiking, treadmill or covering mileage from their garden if possible. Participants can register via the SA Chamber website and are reminded to check local public health guidance before undertaking any outdoor activity.
