From Commitment to Impact: Advancing Gender Equality Through Business Engagement

On 28 February Natalie Naude, Director of the Chamber and two ExCo members Annette Christie and Arlene Wilson-Max attended the Business Engage Mainstreaming Awards.
Across Africa and beyond, the conversation around gender equality in business is shifting — from intention to implementation, from policy to measurable impact. At the forefront of this movement is Business Engage, whose flagship Gender Mainstreaming Awards and International Women’s Day Leadership Experience continue to shape how organisations approach inclusive growth.
The Gender Mainstreaming Awards have been established to recognise companies and individuals who are actively driving gender equality within the workplace. More than a celebration, they serve as a catalyst — encouraging the private sector to embed women into the core of business leadership, decision-making, and opportunity structures. By showcasing best practice across industries, the awards create a platform for learning, benchmarking, and inspiration for organisations at every stage of their transformation journey.
At the heart of the awards is the concept of “gender mainstreaming” — a strategic approach that integrates gender equality into every aspect of business operations. This means not only increasing representation, but ensuring that women are meaningfully included in leadership roles, influence key decisions, and participate fully across value chains. Importantly, the awards recognise real, measurable progress, highlighting organisations that move beyond commitments to tangible outcomes.
The programme spans a range of corporate and individual categories, acknowledging both organisational excellence and the leaders who are driving change from within. What began as a South African initiative has grown into a broader regional platform, now extending across Southern, East, and West Africa, with expansion into the Middle East — a reflection of its growing relevance and influence.
The 2026 awards, held on 28 February, brought together corporate leaders, transformation executives, and policymakers, reinforcing their position as a key moment in the business calendar. For many organisations, participation offers more than recognition — it provides an opportunity to benchmark progress, strengthen ESG credentials, and contribute to a broader dialogue on inclusive economic growth.
Complementing the awards is the Business Engage International Women’s Day Leadership Experience, held on 17 March 2026. Aligned with the global International Women’s Day movement and South Africa’s theme of “Give to Gain,” the event creates a space for reflection, connection, and forward-thinking leadership.
Bringing together business leaders, entrepreneurs, and inclusion practitioners, the experience is designed to celebrate progress while accelerating the journey ahead. Through shared insights and lived experiences, participants are encouraged to lead with purpose — recognising that sustainable growth is built on intentional contribution and collective effort.
Together, these initiatives highlight a powerful truth: that inclusive businesses are not only more equitable but also more resilient, innovative, and future-ready. As organisations continue to navigate an evolving economic landscape, platforms like Business Engage play a vital role in ensuring that gender equality remains not just an aspiration, but a lived reality within the world of work.
