The South African Chamber of Commerce UK is delighted to host its second Gala Dinner at the iconic Mansion House, the official residence of the Mayor of the City of London. This opportunity to network with business associates, peers and friends not only offers a wonderful opportunity to meet members of the Chamber, but to once again remind ourselves of the tremendous potential and opportunity that exists in the trade relations between South Africa and the United Kingdom.

The current Lord Mayor for the City of London, Nicholas Lyons, has chosen a theme to describe the City in the post-pandemic era: Resilient, Resourceful and Responsible. These are qualities which South Africa has similarly embraced.

If there is one key factor that has contributed to the resilience of South Africans, it is our resourcefulness. Despite facing significant challenges, as do many other countries in the post-pandemic era, South Africans have consistently demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt and overcome adversity through innovation, determination and a “can do” attitude.

This resourcefulness has been essential in the economic sphere where a thriving small and medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) sector drives growth and creates jobs. The micro-business sector boasts a pool of many thousands of entrepreneurs crafting and evolving their businesses, a few of whom each year will find a formula which helps them break into the mainstream.

South Africa has a vibrant civil society, with many organizations working to address social and economic issues, and a growing movement which demands that public servants, politicians and business be held to account when they fall short of the expected standards of ethical behaviour.

So, despite facing significant economic challenges, South Africa has many strengths that can be leveraged to build a prosperous future.

These few points remind us why South Africa and Great Britain should be finding more ways to work together. The inextricable mutually beneficial ties that bind the two economies are more robust than an historical relationship. To this end, we’re delighted to be hosting the Gala Dinner as we network and find innovative opportunities with one another.

Keynote Speaker

Our keynote speaker for the evening will be Andrew Selous MP, The Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to South Africa and Mauritius. First elected to parliament in 2001, Andrew is a former soldier in the British Army, former Minister for Prisons under David Cameron and is Second Church Estates Commissioner.
