At this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon, Breadline Africa’s runners are going the distance for the 42 children at Izibonele Educare Centre in South Africa – and Sharon Constançon, Chairman of the SACC, is one of this year’s virtual runners!
Since it was established in 1993, Breadline Africa, also registered with the UK Charities Commission, has had strong ties with its dedicated donors in the UK and, more recently, has enjoyed a cordial relationship with the South African Chamber of Commerce. “We are delighted to bring our organisations together again to raise much-needed funds to provide a 12-metre converted shipping container classroom,” said Breadline Africa’s Director, Marion Wagner.
“During last year’s lockdown, a winter rainstorm caused the church wall to collapse and fall onto Izibonele Educare Centre in Worcester in the Western Cape, destroying everything they had. Since the disaster, the centre has been operating inside the church and sharing church facilities. The new classroom will go a long way towards restoring their pre-school and giving the children their own comfortable, safe space for learning.”

To date, the organisation has placed nearly 700 converted shipping container and prefabricated units, serving as classrooms, kitchens, toilets and libraries in impoverished communities across the country. Since the COVID-19 lockdown began in South Africa in March 2020, Breadline Africa has extended its interventions to include feeding the most vulnerable communities. To date, it has funded more than 2,5 million meals and continues to provide nutritious meals for those in greatest need.
